The tradition of afternoon sleep on the desks

For most students sleep in class results in a severe reprimand. But for these Chinese children such behavior is not just accepted – it is encouraged.
Disciples early grades of primary school number 1 in Goksine (Shaanxi province in western China) live in nearby Xi’an. The school building is too small to make a rest room there, and most of the students live too far away to go home for lunch, so they are forced to spend the midday sleep directly on the desk.
This tradition is known as wujiao and familiar students of all schools in Mainland China and Taiwan – a half-hour sleep after lunch. While such habits may seem strange to Europeans, teachers insist that children are very happy with their “sleeping” situation
