Over the last 1400 years in the Macedonian village of Vevčani, January 14, traditionally held an annual pagan carnival in honor of St. Basil and the New Year according to the old Julian calendar. On this auspicious day the village streets are filled with carnival participants dressed in scary costumes and masks. Highlights of the holiday include political satire, pagan rituals and demonstration of current events in the world.
